FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Key answers about participation models, infrastructure, identity integration and support.

Is eduMEET Federation only for Research and Education?

No. eduMEET originated in the Research and Education community, but the federation model is suitable for trusted organisations that need privacy, control and scalable video collaboration.

Do we need to provide our own infrastructure?

No. There are two ways to participate. Infrastructure contributors provide server resources for media nodes and become part of the shared infrastructure pool. Service subscribers can join without operating their own media node infrastructure.

How does the subscription model work?

The subscription model allows organisations to use eduMEET Federation as a paid service without contributing their own infrastructure. It is designed as a cost-effective alternative to mainstream commercial video-conferencing platforms, while keeping the benefits of open-source software, trusted governance and federated operation.

Can we use our own domain?

Yes. A participating organisation can run the service under its own domain.

Can eduMEET integrate with our institutional login?

Yes. eduMEET supports SSO integration using OpenID Connect. This can include eduGAIN-based identity providers.

Who maintains the software?

The eduMEET team manages the eduMEET software layer, installation, updates and federation-level operation. Infrastructure contributors operate the underlying server environment.

What happens if our media node is unavailable?

The federation model allows traffic to be routed through other available nodes, improving continuity of service.

Can we customise the branding?

Yes. Participants can use their own logo and visual branding within their tenant.

Is eduMEET open source?

Yes. eduMEET is an open-source WebRTC-based platform. The federation builds on this foundation to provide a shared infrastructure model for trusted video collaboration.

How do we start?

Contact the eduMEET Federation team to discuss the right participation path for your organisation. You can join as an infrastructure contributor or as a service subscriber.

What is a concurrent slot?

A concurrent slot represents active service capacity in a category at a given time. eduMEET Federation is sized by concurrent usage rather than by the total number of named users.

Are rooms pre-assigned as Meeting, Lecture or Webinar?

No. Rooms are classified automatically by current participant count. A room can move between categories as participants join or leave.

Can we combine infrastructure contribution and service subscription?

Yes. Organisations can contribute infrastructure, use the resulting entitlement first, and add paid subscriber capacity when usage grows beyond the agreed limits.

What happens if we exceed our entitlement?

Meetings continue and participants are not removed. Excess usage is measured as overage in the relevant category and billed after the monthly peak is calculated.

Do donated cores reduce paid capacity?

Donated cores generate slot entitlement. If usage stays within that entitlement, no additional purchased slots are needed for that capacity.

Why can concurrent capacity pricing be more cost-effective?

Many commercial platforms charge per named user or host. eduMEET Federation is based on concurrent service capacity, which can be more efficient when only a fraction of users host meetings at the same time.
